Tanking Helmet

This post is a continuation of a series about pre-kara tanking gear. Here is a link to the 1st post I made about pre-kara tanking gear and it is about tanking weapons. Anyway here lets get right into our topic for today:

Felsteel HelmFelsteel Helm
I think this is pretty good. It is a craftable item that should be available in the AH. If its not available you can always try to look for a 365 BS to craft it for you. 8 Felsteel bar to make this?! The best part about this helmet is the 3 gem slot availability. 3 solid star of elunes should give you +63 STA. The +33 Defense rating is no joke either. Overall it is a solid starter helmet for a tank.

Other viable choices are the following, but they are a little more harder to get. You have to get into instances and farm for at least the Greathelm and Warhelm. The Headdress is a
reward for finishing a quest in Steamvaults.

An often overlooked fact about the felsteel is its armor, +330 compared to the other three.

What about the Helm of the Stalwart Defender? Guildie gave me plans for it and I crafted my own. It looks insanely ridiculous on an Orc though.

Stalwart Defender is a nice helm I agree. You gain 82 armor, 20 stam, and 23 resil rating for the loss of 10 def rating. The resil rating is a bit of a wtf when it comes to tanking, unless you plan on doing some prot specced pvp in this gear. (I'm assuming anyone wearing this helm to tank will already be at 490 def without even trying) The deciding factor will probably be cost... 22 primal earth, 12 primal mana, a primal nether (150-200g to the crafter on my server) and whatever additional payment is required for the crafter's services (he'll likely want to recoup the cost of the epic BOE recipe that he bought/could have sold at the ah). That said if I happened to be in kinless' position I would have made myself one too...but those of us who aren't blacksmiths, who don't have friend that give us epic boe recipes etc. will have to give the costs some serious thought. ;-p

Stalwart Defender is definitely nice. It is all about the cost that's really the problem =)

What I like about the Greathelm is that it's perfectly viable in both a tanking and DPS set, with the +36 Str. I've since obtained Felsteel, but I still have Greathelm for DPS, and it still looks awesome, and still draws comments from the guild after all this time.
